“Thinking Ahead To High School”
Seventh Grade Workshop and Practice Test

April 25, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to noon on the Saint Mary’s Campus

Many seventh graders and their families are thinking ahead to high school. The Catholic high schools in the East Bay use the HSPT (High School Placement Test) as one of several important indicators for admissions. The best way to prepare for this exam is to pay attention in class, complete any assigned homework, listen to your teacher, ask questions, and get help if needed. In addition, students can benefit from becoming familiar with the test sections and the kind of questions they will be expected to address, particularly those students that experience worry, anxiety, and nervousness surrounding the testing process. As partners in education with yourselves and the grade schools, Saint Mary’s offers seventh grade students a program of support.

On Saturday, April 25, 2009, Saint Mary’s will sponsor a program for seventh grade students to participate in an on-campus workshop from 8am to noon. Students will briefly review testing strategies and then put those strategies “to the test” by way of a standardized exam, designed for seventh graders, with questions and a format similar to the High School Placement Exam HSPT®.

Results of the exam will be mailed home to families in May as a tool for them to assess their child’s personal strengths and areas for growth. The results will include academic suggestions from Saint Mary’s for improvement in reading, writing, and mathematics, if needed. Test results are strictly confidential and are not sent to the student’s school or kept at Saint Mary’s College High School.

Thank you for your interest in the Seventh Grade Workshop and partnering with us to provide a day of support for your child. Many past participants of this workshop have told us that this experience made their high school testing experience easier and less stressful. We hope that you take advantage of this opportunity.
